Gabriel Hulbert
Running for Senator at Large
My name is Gabriel Hulbert, and I am currently a first year Political Science major. In my first year at UC Merced I have been involved with Business Society and the Yosemite Leadership Program. Both of these organizations have taught me leadership and organizational skills by providing me opportunities to create, plan, fund, execute, and manage budgets for events while collaborating with other student organizations.
I am running for senate because I see the benefit that these clubs and organizations not only bring for themselves, but more importantly, the greater student population at UC Merced. As a member of Business Society this year, I was inspired to run for senate as I saw the current senators collaborate with Business Society to bring a motivational speaker, Eric Thomas to UC Merced. I believe that this type of collaboration with ASUCM and student organizations is one of the best ways to foster relationships between ASUCM and students so that a student government organization may better serve the student population as a whole. If elected to senate, I will do my best to create and invest in these relationships in order to serve students and organizations. This will in turn make ASUCM officials more accessible to students. I would also like to create transparency between ASUCM and students so that students are aware of the accessibility to their elected representatives. I plan to do so by reaching out to students and doing everything possible to address their concerns. In particular, I would like to hold all organizations within UC Merced accountable, including TAPS with student parking as well as fight against increases in tuition as many students and families already make a lot of sacrifices to pay for education.
If elected, my main priority would be to ensure that students’ voices are heard and legislation is passed to address student concerns and interests.
